Caring for the Renal Patient – Clinical Gym

What is the aim of this course?
This clinical gym looks at the care of the renal patient. It considers the nursing role in supporting animals with kidney disease and the importance of good nutrition. The gym will also consider the aftercare that can be given to these animals and the best way to offer support to both patients and owners once they return home.
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this workout, you should be able to:
- Revise the physiology of the kidneys and how renal failure affects them
- Identify the main diagnostics and how to support the patient through these
- Understand how best to nurse these animals in practice and how to support owners once they go home
Who is the course for?
This course is for any student or registered veterinary nurses
Course structure
This workout is designed to be completed within one hour and consists of:
- A warm-up to switch on your brain by testing your current knowledge
- A main session of learning to bring you up to date with the topic under discussion
- A warm-down assessment to test and reinforce what you have learnt

Advanced Veterinary Nurse
I am a 12-year qualified veterinary nurse who has worked in small animal practice as both a head nurse and a practice director. I have been working with the Learning, Education and Development team since January 2020, looking after the nursing programme.
I have my Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing and recently obtained my Masters degree in Veterinary Nursing. I have a special interest in medical nursing and love supporting nurses in all aspects of their learning.
