What is the aim of this course?

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge of patient care assistants in the areas of dentistry, surgery and emergency and critical care. It will delve into anatomy, preparation for procedures including emergencies and instrument care.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the anatomy of teeth and the differences between cats, dogs and rabbits and dental preventative measures

  • Prepare for a dental procedure including instruments and the dental machine

  • Consider the role of a surgical assistant in practice, how to ensure asepsis in the theatre environment and instrumentation

  • Consider how to triage a patient and take a history and assess the need for an emergency appointment and list the equipment needed by the clinical team in various circumstances

Who is the course for?

This course is for those employed in the role of Patient Care Assistant (PCA), or one of the equivalent positions (e.g. VCA, ANA, ACA).
