What is the aim of this course?
The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge of patient care assistants in the areas of laboratory skills, neonatal care and the care of inpatients. It will delve into essential skills relating to laboratory samples, preparation for the care of neonates and how to care for inpatients.
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:

Demonstrate how different diagnostic laboratory tests can be run including how a microscope works and identification of blood and urine cells

Consider the needs for various stages of a neonate’s life including nutrition and any additional risk factors to their health

Distinguish the requirements for a hospital environment including record keeping, feeding and observations and assessments of multiple inpatients
Who is the course for?
This course is for those who are employed in the role of Patient Care Assistant (PCA), or one of the equivalent positions (e.g. VCA, ANA, ACA).

I graduated from the University of Bristol in 2015 with a BSc in Veterinary Nursing and Bioveterinary Science. After university, I made a permanent move to the South West where I’m based. I have previously been on BVNA Council where I founded the British Student Veterinary Nursing Association (BSVNA). I started at Langford Veterinary Services as a feline nurse, then made the move to Highcroft and progressed to Deputy Head Nurse. I moved into my role as a Learning Partner in October 2021 and have since completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE).

Advanced Veterinary Nurse
I am a 12-year qualified veterinary nurse who has worked in small animal practice as both a head nurse and a practice director. I have been working with the Learning, Education and Development team since January 2020, looking after the nursing programme.
I have my Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing and recently obtained my Masters degree in Veterinary Nursing. I have a special interest in medical nursing and love supporting nurses in all aspects of their learning.
